Mighty Swell Tiger's BloodMighty Swell Tiger’s Blood Spiked Seltzer Keeps it Weird in the Best Way

Austin, Texas is famous for many things. It’s known for its culture, live music, raucous nightlife, and art scene. The city is famous for its long history as the Texas state capital before and after the US annexed Texas. It is also famous (or perhaps infamous) for its slogan, “Keep Austin Weird”. That “weirdness” brings us to the Austin-based hard seltzer company Mighty Swell who decided to pay tribute to their “weird” roots; they did this by creating Austin-inspired flavors. First listed among the flavors, Tiger’s Blood Spiked Seltzer, is a flavor that Mighty Swell describes as “Wild, weird, and a bit defiant”, and it is all those things and more.

Smells like Coconut!

You can tell a lot about a hard seltzer as soon as you crack open its can. If the scent is too strong, chemical-like, or overly sweet, it can immediately turn you off. That’s why the sweet tropical scent rising from Mighty Swell Tiger’s Blood Spiked Seltzer gave us a pleasant surprise. The aroma of watermelon, coconut, and strawberry blends together so perfectly that the aroma immediately transports you to the beach.

That First Sip

Nothing compares to the first sip of a new, delicious beverage. Tiger’s Blood does not disappoint. As soon as the beverage hits your lips, strawberry notes come through. The strawberry tastes authentic, not syrupy and oversweet. Following close behind strawberry is the flavor watermelon. The coconut comes through last. It’s faint, but you can definitely taste it. It’s a sweet drink — as well as mouthwatering and juicy. Near the end, there is a puckery sweetness to the drink, almost tasting like a watermelon Now & Later candy. The carbonation is at a medium level for hard seltzers, so it’s likely this beverage is not as filling as other hard seltzers.

Natural Sweetness

Made from purified carbonated water, alcohol, natural white grape juice from concentrate, citric acid, natural flavors, potassium citrate, the beverage is sweet in all the right ways. At 3 carbs and 3 grams of sugar, Tiger’s Blood Spiked Seltzer comes in just a little bit higher on carbs and sugars than the average hard seltzer. However, their caloric level is at a very nice 100 calories which is a pleasant surprise for a drink with real fruit juice. As for alcohol, Tiger’s Blood has a 5% abv which is pretty average for hard seltzers. If you like a sweeter beverage with real fruit juice, Tiger’s Blood is a great choice.

Fun packaging

The packaging for this spiked seltzer series is just plain fun. Mighty Swell hired local Austin, Texas artist Rex Hamilton to design the groovy cans. One of the most eye-catching of the bunch is the orange and green can with a tiger staring up at you. The company tells us “No tigers were harmed in the making of this beverage”. As their hard seltzer is named Tiger’s Blood, we have to appreciate this tongue-in-cheek reassurance.
